Rabbi Vanessa Ochs
Rabbi Vanessa Ochs, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Religious Studies and co-founder of the Jewish Studies Program at the University of Virginia. An anthropologist of religion, writer, and teacher, she has devoted her career to the study of Jewish ritual, material culture, and Jewish feminism. She was ordained by Rabbi Benay Lappe, Rosh Yeshiva of SVARA.
Rabbi Vanessa is the author of The Passover Haggadah: A Biography; Inventing Jewish Ritual (winner of a National Jewish Book Award); Sarah Laughed: Modern Lessons from the Wisdom and Stories of Biblical Women; Words on Fire: One Woman's Journey into the Sacred; The Jewish Dream Book (with Elizabeth Ochs); and Safe and Sound. With Rabbi Irwin Kula, she co-edited The Book of Jewish Sacred Practices: CLAL's Guide to Everyday and Holiday Rituals and Blessings.
Rabbi Vanessa and her husband, Jewish philosopher Peter Ochs, divide their time between Providence and Little Compton, Rhode Island. When she is not teaching, writing, preparing couples for their Jewish weddings, and participating in the Jewish communal life of Providence, she spends time with family, raises herbs, and practices yoga.
