Draft Statement
Religious Coalition for a Violence-Free Rhode Island
(you may indicate your opinion about Board of Rabbis group endorsement and/or your individual endorsement of this statement on the short questionnaire following this text)
As religious leaders from various faith traditions, we come together to assert that safety and security are fundamental needs of all human beings and are necessary for a stable and healthy society.
Our resolve and common commitment to a violence-free society, is drawn from a wellspring of diverse, but deeply rooted traditions that flourish in Rhode Island.
Protestant Christians include a variety of denominations, interpretations, and viewpoints, but we center our faith in the God revealed in the bible. We take seriously the Prophet Micah's vision of a world where the old shall sit under their fig trees, and children shall play in the streets, and "none shall make them afraid." In the Gospels, Jesus’ admonition to “love your enemies” precludes any recourse to retribution, coercion and violence. Thus, all Christians are entrusted with a ministry of reconciliation. Peace and justice are essential beliefs that we joyfully pursue with all committed people.
Jewish tradition emphasizes the sanctity and primary value of human life. The Torah commands us, "Thou shalt not murder" (Exodus 20:13). The Talmud teaches us that "he who takes one life it is as though he has destroyed the universe and he who saves one life it is as though he has saved the universe" (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). The dehumanization of human life stands in direct violation of our tradition. We pray for the day when, in the words of the prophet Isaiah, the people of the earth "beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks." (Isaiah 2:4)
Secular Humanists recognize compassion as one of our founding values, and from this flows a commitment to peace and peaceful solutions to our differences. Guided by nonreligious moral conviction, we work for a world without violence, where each person may be free to achieve their full potential.
Unitarian Universalists embrace a diversity of background and belief, but affirm core principles beginning with a deep recognition of each persons inherent dignity and worth. We are committed to justice, equality and compassion in human relations and to putting our faith into action. We also affirm that “all people share a moral responsibility to create peace and commit ourselves to a radically inclusive and transformative approach to peace” (Unitarian Universalist 2010 Statement of Conscience)
We arrive at a common commitment to promoting a safe and secure community from a variety of religious and cultural traditions. We recognize a universal yearning in all human hearts for peace and justice. We are in pain when we see the emotional trauma, spiritual anguish, social damage and physical destruction caused by acts of violence.
We assert that we have a responsibility to give voice to the values upon which our faith is grounded, not only with a statement of conscience but through acts of conscience that honor those values. Thus, we have covenanted to affirm and promote principles of nonviolence embodying the moral convictions of our respective faith traditions.

As religious leaders from various faith traditions, we come together to assert that safety and security are fundamental needs of all human beings and are necessary for a stable and healthy society.
- We recognize the inherent worth and dignity of each person and the equal entitlement of every member of the human family to life, liberty and security of person.
- We affirm that everyone has the rights to freedom of conscience, thought and religion, as well as the right to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.
- We know violence has proven to be ineffective and unnecessary to achieve an outcome. It frequently results in escalating conflict rather than bringing remedy or resolution.
- We recognize the complexity of the causes of violence and the need for thorough analysis, comprehensive strategies, and sustained effort.
- We have learned that non-violence in the long run is a more productive method of expressing moral good will, reducing resentment and animosity. “At the center of non-violence stands the principle of love.” - The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

There was a lengthy conversation regarding the role of the Board in raising collective voice on political issues. Amy brought of Immigration Reform which led to a larger discussion. It was decided that in the future when a statement is emailed around, silence will equal agreement so that statements can be sent out in a timely fashion when need dictates.
The full Brandeis Study of poverty in the RI Jewish community was released.
There are discussions about the future of The Voice. Minna Ellison is the contact for those who have opinions about the matter. For the moment, Arthur Norman is the editor.
There is still a clergy discretionary account in the amount of 1500$ at JFS. The decision was made to remind the Board about this account. Recipients may be referred to JFS who will assess and then provide funds if necessary.
Andy Klein graciously agreed to be the Treasurer.
There was additional discussion about a future teaching event, but no decision was reached.
Amy asked for folks to share any end of life resources that they might have with her.

Peter--Israel Advocacy Training--
Barry--was actually “feisty” and more interesting than expected. How to convince people against BDS and understand them in dialogue
Jim--seems like a healthy program
Amy could arrange for a BOR session, doesn't seem like there is extensive interest among the group, Wayne offered another option that garnered more interest. .
Voice Herald. . .
BOR sponsored education opportunity?
JCDS as sponsor? Like renaissance evening? late November? for Jewish Book month?
then do local things. . .

Beth Shalom, Providence
Elan Babchuck, Les Gutterman, Andy Klein, Alan Flam, Barry Dolinger, Amy Levin, Sarah Mack, Mark Mandel
Barry led everyone in limmud.
Camps grant at the Alliance will fund 4 very part time “Camp Ambassador” positions. This person would work on Jewish camping in the congregations divided up by area. Looking for suggestions for the positions.
Touro Fraternal has scholarships for Jewish Camping.
Perhaps the Alliance can look into stipends for Day School Education.
One big Camps expo would be really helpful and supported by the synagogues.
Wendy and Deb Schuster from the Alliance:
Helping hands--A pool of money started by donors, administered by the Alliance as resource for more donors and JFS, Jewish Seniors to identify needs, Trying to figure out who needs what in RI. So far have funded things like co-pay for medications, furniture, emergency needs.
Les mentioned a rubric used for Soviet Jews 25 years ago and to be concerned about liability issues. Elan suggested a column in the Voice Herald with stories. Concern was raised about discretion.
Wendy--it would be very helpful for rabbis to brainstorm names for a committee and those who can help with things like resumes, engineering, etc.
Keep it grassroots if possible--Amy
Deb will get written information so we can put it in May Bulletins.
Amy:
Statement on Gun Violence sent to both Senators.
Also follow up with Tzvi blanchard and community issues.
Will reach out to Imam Hamid and try to get another Rabbi/Imam conversation
Meeting May 9th in Attleboro
Kallah--need to reach out to Scholar in Residence for June.
Marc Tzvi Brettler? Wayne will reach out to him.
Elan Babchuck, Les Gutterman, Andy Klein, Alan Flam, Barry Dolinger, Amy Levin, Sarah Mack, Mark Mandel

February 2013 / אדר תשע"ג / The Jewish Community Day School of RI
Barry Dolinger, Wayne Franklin, Andrea Gouze, Les Gutterman, Andy Klein, Amy Levin, Sarah Mack, Marc Mandel, Jim Rosenberg, Peter Stein, Elyse Wechterman
Limmud: Marc Mandel / sugya from Megillah
Iyyun: Statement on Marriage Equality
Andy and Alan drafted a statement. CRC passed a statement last fall. The idea is that there should be one Jewish Statement. Les--any reason it doesn’t say “committed”?
Barry--The point of the second paragraph is important for Orthodox rabbis to sign on. Add language in that paragraph about the benefit to the Jewish Community from Church and state. Important that we are making a statement on this
Andy--when the RI Council of Churches made the statement, they were clear that it was not unanimous. Do we have a policy about that--can we endorse it if we are not unanimous?
Amy--We might be unanimous? In the past when we have not been unanimous, we have included names. But if we are providing this statement with the rest of the Jewish Community we should come to some consensus.
Important thing is the headline: Jewish Community Supports Marriage Equality.
Jim--Important to have independent BOR statement (Les agrees) based on analogousness to Council of Churches.
Les---can we have a small group decide in the future? Amy--it is easy enough to send an email around and get everyone’s input. This has worked pretty well with other issues, Gaza, Gun Control etc.
Peter--Will Chabad or other Vaad come out with a statement against it?
This BOR represents the bulk of the Jews in RI.
Peter--take “respect” out of last paragraph due to wording. Les--committed” would amplify “loving”?
Barry--this is a paragraph to throw God Language in--B’tzelem Elohim or Kavod Ha briot.
“As rabbis we believe that every human being is created in the image of God; thus, it is our obligation. . . .every loving couple”
Add: This liberty is in keeping with Roger Williams’ vision for religious freedom that is pivotal to our state's identity.
Other things we can all do and encourage our congregations to do:
Guest Presentation: JCDSRI Board President Rachel Friedberg and Marissa Garber
BOR and JCDSRI are key partners in Jewish engagement
In the times of retrenchment in the organized Jewish community it is more important than ever that we work together. JCDSRI is an entry point to Jewish life. It would be great to consider how JCDS can help families affiliate and connect to congregations.
Strong pluralistic community
Rabbi’s voices are very helpful to get the word out to young families. We strengthen each other. Helps us attract Jewish leadership to the state.
Great Quality of education, happy families.
We are small-- enrollment does need to grow to maintain sustainability.
Zimriyah is tonight
Les-say a word about financial viability
Response: School has had rocky financial past, receivership is over, debt is gone. Balance budget.
To keep the balanced budget school does need more kids.
Head of school search--24 resumes, down to final interviews.
Barry is on the committee--a great committee and a progressive search.
Elyse--is there a scholarship fund?
JCDS is less expensive than other private schools and is also generous with financial aid. JCDS will go to great lengths to make sure every Jewish child can afford a place there.
Amy--suggest that congregational websites link to JCDS, and put in community calendar part of newsletter. It is a challenge to help our day school kids feel like they are part of our congregational communities since they don't sit in class with their supplementary school peers.
Marissa Garber--co chair of parent association. Gala information. Proceeds fund field trips, support budget, community building events, subsidize outreach position, and support financial aid. Gala is on June 2nd, rock star themed gala, Met in Hope Artiste Village, food from Veggie Fun, Auction. Please come and add the information to your weekly emails/newsletters.
Tzvi Blanchard Reminder--Please RSVP for lunch to Wendy Joering at [email protected]
Photographer has offered to meet with people who missed him. Please let Amy know if you'd like to have your photograph taken. Amy will send link out again.
Next meeting: March 14th at Am David. Limmud by Wayne.

Next meeting: March 14th at Am David. Limmud by Wayne.
January 2013 / טבת תשע"ג / Temple Sinai, Cranston
Attending: Andrea Gouze, Elyse Wechterman, Marc Mandel, Elan Babchuck, Wayne Franklin, Peter Stein, Ben Lefkowitz, Amy Levin, Sarah Mack, Rick Perlman, Marc Jagolinzer, Barry Dolinger
Limmud with Peter Stein: Names of those who influenced us on Rabbinic Path
1) Jeffrey Savit and Minna Ellison, Fern Chertok and Dina Blackman
Alan Hassenfeld funding a study of poverty and needs in Rhode Island Jewish Community. Important to understand the needs of our Jewish community—Jewish Rhode Islanders in Need might put the spotlight on glaring problems in our community. Contacted the Cohen Center at Brandeis.—Fern Chertok will need all of our help to do this survey.
Fern gave a brief introduction to the study. A census would be too expensive and take too long. The word “need” will be used instead of “poverty”—because the federal poverty level is so low—there are many in need who live above this line. Hidden Needy or New Needy don’t show up as eligible for entitlement programs and don’t classify themselves as such.
Community scan of services—what is out there for those in need? How do they find their way into it? New Needy are not finding the portals to this aid.
Looking at Hardship and Need closely with interviews of individual.
Fern will need two things from rabbis:
a) Names for confidential interviews
b) Wants to know who has asked for help from rabbis in a given month
The study will create action and implementation steps for the Alliance.
Amy will put the form on our website—and a reminder email.
2) Amy handed out forms for every rabbi to get a card to get into the Alliance building. Wayne reminded the group that rabbis are eligible for a complimentary family membership to the JCC.
3) Statement on Newtown Shootings—Elyse and Wayne suggested that issues of mental health and gun control should be separated.
Consensus is to go with Wayne’s statement and take a separate stand on mental health issues.
4) If you haven’t signed up for a d’var Torah, please do.
We will meet the second Thursday of each month at 8:30 am.
i. Feb 14th at JCDSRI.
ii. March 14th at Am David
iii. April 11th at Beth Shalom
iv. May 9th at Agudas Achim in Attleboro
v. We will set a date for Kallah in June

5) Tzvi Blanchard rescheduled date---Tuesday February 26th (Morning)

December 2012 / Temple Emanuel, Providence
Attendance: Amy Levin, Mordechai Rackover, Elan Babchuck, Wayne Franklin, Barry Dolinger, Peter Stein, Elyse Wechterman, Ben Lefkowitz, Marc Mandel
Dvar Torah offered by Barry Dolinger
1. Discussion of “Certification” of Non-Jewish funeral homes by BRGRI
a. What does Board of Rabbis certification mean? Wayne related that historically it had to do with ethical business practices and behaviors. However, several people expressed a concern that it might mean different things to different people and there is no current consensus on what it means.
b. Several colleagues work with non-Jewish funeral homes individually and related their experiences. Several questions came up about various practices.
c. Concern expressed about cutting into the business of the two existing Jewish funeral homes (they exclusively serve the Jewish community).
d. ACTION ITEMS:
i. Wayne will look into the older existing policies of the Board of rabbis and find documentation of existing “certification:
ii. Mordechai will ask Sugarman’s and Shalom Chapels how many funerals they each do a year.
iii. Amy, Elyse, and Mordechai will form a committee to explore what certification from the Board of Rabbis might mean. They hope to arrive at a consensus of what is expected for “Jewish funerals.”
2. Interfaith Work
a. The RI State Council of Churches is transforming itself into a Multi-faith institution. Barry and Amy have agreed to sit on an “Advisory Board” to help manage this transformation.
b. Amy is working with the MASJID (Council of Imams in the area) to arrange a continuation of our study together. People expressed their ideas of what that should look like; generally people agreed that they wanted to get to know the Imams on a personal basis. Mordechai suggested that Brown, as a highly diverse and integrated community, would be the ideal place to host any programming.
3. Announcements , etc.
a. Peter will let us know a rescheduled date for study with Tzvi Blanchard – most likely the first week in February.
b. Amy and Alvan met with Marybeth Hayes from the Chaplaincy Center. Janie Hodges is no longer at Miriam Hospital. Some of the chaplains have expressed a concern about the Center and their working conditions. The center is creating a new board and has asked for Rabbinic representation. Amy will send out information and is looking for volunteers.
c. Barry is scheduling a conversation with the relevant parties re: Mikvah issues
d. Positive feedback on Amy’s carefully worded statement published jointly with Imams and Christian leaders re: Israel/Palestine violence.
e. Please sign up for D’vrei Torah in Voice Herald and follow through with those commitments.
NEXT meeting: January 3, 8:30 am, Temple Sinai (with Photographer who will take pictures for blog)
Respectfully submitted Elyse Wechterman
